Cardigans have undisputedly become the go-to outerwear piece of every fashionista — whether you’re based in hot and humid Indonesia or in the United Kingdom, where the weather is much chillier during this time of the year. Opt for a cropped number with a snug fit if you wish to channel Cher in Clueless or rock it loose and chunky if you’re planning for a cosy night in. Either way, there’s bound to be a cardigan that will help you to bundle up stylishly in time for Fall. Read on as we highlight five trending cardigan designs to shop for now.
The crisp cream outer
We understand the pains of keeping a cream-coloured fashion essential in its pristine, stain-free condition, but we reckon the effort is worth it. Case in point: South Korean fashion influencer Hye Li looking incredibly chic yet comfortable in her oversized cardigan from MOIA and white pants. Wearing neutral colours such as black, navy and white is an effective way for you to look instantly put together, as long as you opt for simple and classic designs, just like Hye Li. She completes her ensemble with a pair of black-framed glasses and a rectangular-shaped watch.
Bundle up in: Urban Outfitters’ UO ringo brushed cardigan, which looks similar to Hye Li’s with its ivory shade, deep V-neck design and roomy fit. That said, this cardigan is cropped short so that it highlights your hips and waist. Accessorise with a few layered necklaces to dress up this cosy get-up.
The granny favourite
It’s time to look to your dear ol’ nana’s dressing as granny-style cardigans are in vogue this season. Yes, we’re talking crocheted details and kitschy colours which minimalist dressers would rather stay away from. Above, South Korean influencer Kim Ewha, who also runs her very own female clothing brand 906 Studio, has perfected the art of autumnal casual dressing with her multicoloured cardigan, turtleneck top and blue denim jeans outfit. She tops off her look with red lips and mahogany-hued accessories, which further shows that she’s not afraid of colour, and instead, boldly embraces it.
Bundle up in: Dannijo’s loppy sweater cardigan, which features large front buttons and a pink-to-purple ombre hue. Made of nylon, mohair and wool, this item is slightly chunkier than regular cardigans and is best reserved for socially distanced cinema movie dates. With the cardigan’s on-trend ombre colour as the focal point, complete your ensemble with a simple silky dress or with a tee and jeans.
The ‘Katie Holmes’
The “bradigan” that almost broke the Internet last year (thanks to the power of actress Katie Holmes who was papped in hers as she was out and about in New York City), continues to be a hot fashion item this Fall. Above, fashion illustrator Jenny Walton sported the exact design that was worn by Katie, which is by women’s ready-to-wear brand Khaite.
Bundle up in: Trendyol’s cardigan set, whose knitted cropped tank top features a longer length compared to Khaite’s if you’re not ready to show too much skin. This set is also perfect for our climate as it’s made of acrylic, a much more lightweight and affordable alternative to cashmere.
The logo lover
Hoping to take a break from classic designs and neutral hues? Opt for a prep school-inspired look instead, where logos and bright colours are very much welcome. Filipino content creator Rei Germar looks preppy and pretty in her pine-coloured cropped cardigan. Green is not the easiest colour to pull off, but she makes it work by pairing it with a pair of high-waisted black jeans.
Bundle up in: Gucci’s season wool and cotton piqué cardigan from its Pre-Autumn/Winter 2020 collection, which also evokes a strong ‘ladies who lunch’ ‘70s vibe. This crewneck cardigan is designed for a slim fit and features gold anchor buttons for that added preppy effect. Nail the nerdy chic look by styling it with with a checkered skirt and loafers.
The shoulder draper
An effortless styling trick that you can adopt especially when the weather becomes erratic. Invest in a classic long-sleeve cardigan which you can drape across your shoulders — perfect for slipping into when the weather gets chilly. It’s a fun layering technique that you can have fun with as well. Above, Swedish YouTuber and fashion influencer Emelie styled hers with a V-neck sleeveless vest, a white shirt and understated jewellery.
Bundle up in: Zara’s contrasting knit cardigan. This piece provides a twist on the classic cardi with its contrast collar and orange floral design. Its button-up front design makes it easy for you to wear it as a long-sleeve cropped top if you want to or as a draped piece depending on your mood and preferences.
Will you be investing in a comfy cardigan this season?
