Here's an open secret in the beauty community: most of us find makeover counters intimidating. It doesn't matter if you're a beauty newbie or a veteran, walking into a makeup or skincare store and asking for a consultation or a makeover can be unnerving. Often, we worry that the consultants would make fun of our skin or be pushy with selling us their products. But is it really that daunting?

"Before this, I was a makeover counter virgin so I didn't know what to expect. To prepare for it, I went in without makeup — baring my dark spots and all. Despite that, I was still treated to a thorough cleansing, toning and moisturising using products that suit my oily-combination skin. I particularly loved the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (PHP1900/~USD35.93) because it hydrates without leaving a greasy texture.
The first step is to determine your skin type
After all the skincare prep, we moved on to makeup. I asked Reno, the beauty consultant who attended to me, for a natural-looking, everyday makeup look with a little glam. We started the makeover session with him spritzing Moisture Surge Spray (PHP1650/~USD31.20), which I found very cooling and refreshing. Reno also told me that it helps hold the makeup in place. Next, we swatched some foundation and it turns out that my perfect match is the Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer in Cream Beige (PHP2000/~USD37.82). As someone with oily skin, I have an aversion to full coverage foundations because they often look cakey or can clog pores. But I would say that Clinique's Beyond Perfecting is one of the rare exceptions. It's very skin-like but gives a super flawless finish.
